Ideology, Not Savings

The last US government shutdown was in 1995, and lasted 21 days. That one was also instigated by the Republican Party, against the then President Bill Clinton. It’s become the Republican style of opposition.

The last shutdown cost the country $1.4 billion.

According to sources, the latest discussions have focused, not on money, but on Republican demands to cut abortion rights, stop the EPA Clean Air Act (which will allow corporations to continue polluting the air we breathe and discharging even more greenhouse gases into the atmosphere), and undermining the new Healthcare Act – on behalf of their financiers, the insurance companies.

So much for the Republican argument about cutting budget costs.
