How Sick Do We Have To Be?

Are you sick? No, sick this is not about the US Healthcare system – or, medicine lack of it. Are you sick of the lies?

It’s become commonplace; the norm. Tell the people anything. Tell them lies, then tell them more lies. They’ll believe it. At least, most of them will. The rest will be too few in number to matter.

It’s happening everywhere. Where once government was for the people, by the people, now government is for the corporate profiteer, by the corporate profiteer. The people no longer matter. They’re easily manipulated. Just tell them a few lies, and most will believe it.

It’s not just happening in America. It may have started there, but now it’s a trend that is taking over the whole world.

What has happened to honest government? Why is the term “open government”, once a favorite of politicians vying for votes, now obsolete?

In a place no one’s ever heard of, a small town in South Wales, UK, called Ffos-y-fran, in the county of East Merthyr, there’s been a real stink going on for two years, yet few outside the local community are aware of it.

A new project is being pushed through the planning stages with the help of the local authorities. Local residents are objecting strongly, but the development company and the official county planners are calling the project, “The East Merthyr Reclamation Scheme.” It will, they say, reclaim scrub-land and old mine working sites and turn it back into good recreational areas to the benefit of local people.

It sounds a good idea, doesn’t it? East Merthyr was once a prime coal-mining area and part of the land still contains derelict mines that would be removed by this scheme.

So what, you might ask, are the locals so upset about?

How about the biggest opencast coal mine in Europe?

The “East Merthyr Reclamation Scheme” is the biggest of ten opencast mining schemes approved in Britain in 2006. “Reclaiming” the land for the locals of Ffos-y-fran involves the removal of 123 million cubic meters of rock from over 1,000 acres of site. Miller Argent, the company involved, will then extract 10.8 million tons of coal before any “land reclamation” can begin – in seventeen years time.

Many of the residents of Ffos-y-fran will be dead long before their land becomes ‘recreational’.

Ten new opencast coalmines in Britain make a mockery of the politicians claims to care about global warming.

Tell the people anything. Tell them lies, then tell them more lies. They’ll believe it. At least, most of them will. The rest will be too few in number to matter.

Remember “Operation Iraqi Freedom?”

Remember the glorious American and British troops fighting their way into Baghdad to liberate the poor Iraqis from their vile dictator? Well, we all know the result of that, don’t we? How many of us are aware that, instead of liberating the Iraqis, we’re walling them up behind barricades to make them easier to control?

According to a Reuter’s report yesterday:

“More than a thousand Iraqis marched in west Baghdad on Saturday in a rare public demonstration to protest against a wall they say the U.S. military is planning to erect around their neighborhood.” [my underline]

Reuters is wrong. This is not a ‘rare public demonstration’ against the building of walls. There have been at least twelve such demonstrations since the first wall was erected in Ahdamiya back in April 2007.

Has the American government told the truth about Iraq? Or, has it lied, hedged, cheated, dodged, and refused to comment on matters it wanted us to know nothing about, for the last five years?

We, the people, are being used. We, the people, no longer matter. We, the people, are of no greater importance to the American, or British, French, German, or any other government, than were the people of the USSR under Stalin. There, it was a Communist government that ruled for itself, using the people as economic slaves; in the West it is Corporate governments ruling for themselves and treating the people in a similar manner.

Oh, come – you cry – it’s not as bad as that!

Not yet. But remember this: when governments stop working for the people and become self-indulgent, it means the people are no longer respected. Loss of respect leads to contempt. When something becomes contemptible, it is disposable.

Stalin had no respect for the Russian people.

How much respect does your government have for you?

Sick of the lies?

Tell the people anything. Tell them lies, then tell them more lies. They’ll believe it. At least, most of them will. The rest will be too few in number to matter.

Are you sick?
