If there’s anyone out there who still considers the BBC to be an impartial media corporation, then the latest interview by John Humphries, a veteran BBC broadcaster now fronting the Today programme on BBC Radio Four, should help them to change their minds.
The interview was with Helen McEntee,…
…Ireland’s Europe Minister, and during the course of the programme, as reported by the Guardian yesterday, Humphries came straight out and suggested that Ireland’s best course of action would be to leave the European Union and join the U.K.:
Humphrys said: “There has to be an argument, doesn’t there, that says instead of Dublin telling this country that we have to stay in the single market etc within the customs union, why doesn’t Dublin, why doesn’t the Republic of Ireland, leave the EU and throw in their lot with this country?”
The Irish Republican Army fought a low-level civil war with the northern Irish Protestant Ulster Volunteer Force and the British government, from 1969 until the Good Friday Agreement of 1998, which brought a period of relative peace to the island. The border between north and south became merely symbolic. Any suggestion of joining Ireland to the U.K. would be anathema to the IRA and could easily result in a major upsurge of violence that could set north and south back fifty years.
Helen McEntee’s response was decidedly blunt:
McEntee replied: “To suggest that we should leave? Ninety-two per cent of Irish people last year said they wanted Ireland to remain part of the European Union and in fact since Brexit that figure has gotten only bigger….We did not vote for Brexit. We don’t believe in it. We respect that it was a democratic decision. We are protecting a peace process. This is not just from an Irish point of view, there is an obligation on the UK to ensure the peace process, the Good Friday agreement is protected and any suggesting that they can walk away from that we simply won’t accept.”
The interview came hours before hundreds of people gathered on the border to protest against Brexit. The Border Communities Against Brexit group, which placed a mock concrete wall and army inspection post on the border just south of Newry, said they were taking “a stand against Brexit, against borders, against division”.
“We never want to see a border on this island again,” they said.[1]
It’s not the first time Humphries…
…has shown bias in favour of BREXIT. In May 2018 the pro-European news outlet, New European, was critical of the Today programme, expressing concern with Humphries’ “cosy relationship” with the rabid pro-Brexit rag, Daily Mail, and Boris Johnson, one of the leading Brexit campaigners.[2]
There can be little doubt that the BBC continues to allow Humphries and the Today programme to exhibit such bias in favour of Brexit because it suits them to do so.
