R. J. Adams
R. J. Adams grew up in the north-west of England close to the busy port of Liverpool. He spent his leisure time sailing small boats on the River Mersey. His interest in animals grew as he matured and resulted in a position as animal technician at the Veterinary Faculty of Liverpool University, where he worked with small laboratory animals, pigs and goats; later moving to the University Veterinary Field Station to gain experience of larger domestic animals including horses, sheep and cattle.
After gaining diplomas in animal technology he assisted in the establishment of the small animal breeding unit at Chester Zoological Gardens in Cheshire, England, before leaving the profession for more lucrative employment as stock auditor of a national chocolate manufacturer near Liverpool.
Unable to remain long from the animals he loved, he soon applied to join the ranks of Inspectors for the largest and most respected of British animal welfare charities, the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
After thirteen years as an RSPCA Inspector, R J Adams left the Society to pursue another of his great loves; boating. In 1990, he became general manager of the second largest inland waterways marina in Britain, and forever an ‘outdoorsman’, lived afloat on a traditional canal narrowboat for a number of years, before moving to a cottage in the hills of mid-Wales, to spend his leisure hours walking the countryside he loves.
He took early retirement from the marina in 2002 and emigrated to the U.S.A. where he began to fulfill another long-denied passion – writing.
During the fourteen years spent in the United States R J Adams studied the politics of that nation, it’s societies and culture. He concluded it was not the nation portrayed by Disney, Hollywood, or any other media outlet. America is a complex and often violent country where guns are the true religion and the Christianity it vehemently professes merely a distorted vehicle for the arrogance and superiority of a superpower in decline; something that is not always obvious to outsiders. The U.S. political system, once the envy of the world, is spiraling down into corruption and mismanagement, allowing powerful, greedy, forces to take control and manipulate politicians with bribes and lucrative promises, to the detriment of many who live there.
R J Adams has spent much of his retirement writing of the problems within this once great nation and much of his work can be found on his website: Sparrow Chat.
“Even Little Sparrows”, his first book, was originally manuscripted in the 1980’s, though not published till 2003 in paperback. It has recently been republished in digital format (Amazon Kindle).
His second book, “Yarns of a Professional Gongoozler”, a series of short stories based around his experiences of life on the English canal system, is available in eBook (Amazon Kindle) format, and was published as a paperback in the summer of 2008.
In 2015, he left the United States and moved across the Atlantic, to a property overlooking the beautiful countryside of Brittany in Northern France.
He is currently working on a number of other writing projects, including the controversial, political blog – “Sparrow Chat.”
