Like all the commentators above, I am also away from "home". I would like to use the word "home" loosely because, quite frankly I have been living outside Turkey every since I was 12, now I am 42, so calculate! :)

However, I have kept very close ties with Turkey as my extended family resides in Istanbul and I married a Turkish man from Ankara. But do I feel fully Turkish? NO! I feel a bit of everything. I even feel a little bit of a Londoner as I lived there for 12 years prior to moving to the US.

As for the patriotism in the US, I fully concur with your comments. After 9/11 I was astonished at the level of hate towards Muslims in general. I even feared for myself and my family a little... It was really really horrible for about 5 years but now everything seems to be relatively calm...

The flags, the stickers, the hateful comments towards Muslims, the attacks on the media and the streets were nauseating... not just in the US but pretty much all over the western world... :(

Will humans ever learn? I think humans are designed to destroy their own kind with slow and suffocating death.... I feel for my children and their children....

Great post, RJA, as an emigrant myself, I can relate, though the ties diminish more as time goes by though never disappear. I think NL has been a huge help to me, I still get that feeling I sensed when I first landed at Port-Aux Basques. "I'm home". I would never have anticipated that feeling existing outside of Ireland for me.
I'm still astonished.
XO

Hi RJ,
Thank you for posting that (and the link to Twilight's post :-) )
As someone on the verge of leaving the UK (for NZ rather than the US), both perspectives were very interesting to read, and are helping me come to terms with this big scary step in my life!

That's a lovely comment-cum-blogpost, RJ - thank you! It warms the cockles of me heart.

You have more remaining ties to the UK than I do, and therefore a level more difficulty than I have - if not in the forefront of your mind, then I feel sure it must be so so subconsciously.

As I responded to a commenter on my blog on this topic, had I landed into a different US family, with different outlook and attitudes, I reckon I'd be back in Blighty now, there's little doubt in my mind on that score. I was lucky, as you were, I think.
Or maybe we're both good judges. ;-)

As you say - here's to the next 5, or 7 - or 17....or ...!
