Twilight - this administration has gone out of its way to abolish the checks and balances. Inventing a war without end is the most useful tool for achieving this.

WWW - your figure is somewhat high. Statistics based solely on the number of FBI background checks show sales figures in the region of 800,000 to 900,000 a month, though this rose immediately after 9/11 to well over a million. Many more would have been sold illicitly at gun fairs and the like. It probably safe to assume an annual figure would be around 9-10 million. Still staggering!

A further erosion of the U.S. system, I agree, RJA and with Twilight's comment. Corporate America and the powerful NRA have their lobbyist fingers in every aspect of American governance. Anybody know what the annual sales of handguns are? Billions would be my guess.

We're in complete agreement here RJ (3 cheers!!)

I learned (for my citizenship civics/history test) that the Supreme Court's job is to explain and interpret laws. If they had done their job with regard to the 2nd Amendment I feel sure they'd have come to the same decision as you did - any logical, clear-minded, analytical mind would have to do so. The Judges are now just another of the President's tools.

I don't understand why the President is the one to have the last word in appointing the 9 Judges. It would seem much fairer for them to be chosen by a wide cross-section of their peers.

The famous 'checks and balances' envisioned by the Founding Fathers when they defined the three sections of government in the US do seem to have been filtered out slowly but surely don't they?
